Rafael G Campoy was born and raised in southern California. When he was 7 years old his father quit working for The C.F. Braun Corporation to start their own business in swimming pool construction. For the next 10 years, every weekend and every summer break Rafael and his father drove all over southern California, in their 1950 Chevy pickup, working on swimming pools. From job site to job site, they spent their time talking about all the adventures and places that his father had seen through the years.

Rafael’s father had grown up in the early 1900’s, fatherless, had lived through the great depression, experienced the horrors of World War II as a paratrooper, and journeyed throughout Europe after the war. The multitude of people he met and stories he told to his son sparked a desire for young Rafael to go on his own adventures, to see those places and meet those people. The stories told by his father are the root of the stories in this book.

Rafael gained his enthusiasm of sailing the open ocean from his tour in the U.S. Coast Guard on board a 113 ft cutter in the cold waters of the north Pacific. He holds a Masters of Science Degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has worked as an aerospace engineer for nearly 40 years, and travels throughout the U.S. and Europe, tracing the path of his characters, seeing the places that they must have seen, and listening to the stories that people have to tell. It has been my great joy to write and share these stories with you. It is my hope that you may take away a glimmer of the message that my father endeavored to pass on to me: "There is no greater quest than your attempt to have lived a life of honor."
