Synopsis
It was a time when the population of the known world was a hundred times smaller than it is today. It was a time when the amount of gold and treasures being shipped over oceans was a hundred times greater than it is today. The world was devoid of asphalt and automobiles. And multimedia was 500 years away.
Born in the year 1501, Arturo Campandia is now 12 years old when he, his mother, and his father must secretly leave their home in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains of north-eastern Spain. This is the story of a nearly 500-year journey of a boy who becomes a man, who is blessed and cursed with a blood condition that slows his aging. But his condition also comes with other side effects.
During his journey from ancient Spain to Mexico, to modern day California, and points between, Arturo witnesses the good and the bad of history. He experiences the splendor of love and the heartache of seeing loved ones grow old and pass. Also, early in his life, he acquires a nemesis that follows Arturo across the globe, pursuing him out of hatred, jealousy, and a twisted sense of honor.
Although Arturo has this blood condition of long life, he knows that he is not immortal and a fatal wound could end his life like any other person. The final question that he must answer is ‘What is the point of it all?’ It will take Arturo his entire life to understand why he has been placed on this long, long journey.
In book 2 Arturo takes his gift to distant lands with the intent to help save a close friend. But as time passes and Arturo grows older, it becomes evident to Arturo that his good health and vitality, in contrast to others, will become suspect to even his friends.
How far is a person required to go for the welfare of his fellow man? At what point is a man allowed to cut and break to save his own skin? For that matter, when is it perfectly reasonable to let the next man go into that battle while you enjoy that well-earned rest? In book II Arturo’s commitment to selfless honor is brought to the test.
Arturo and his companions plunge themselves into a mission to free a comrade from prison, that will otherwise leave him to a torturous end. But they never imagined that their exit strategy would be a hundred times more challenging than the simple prison break itself. Join the boys as they venture into a world that will cause them to question God himself for creating such a blistering, hellish place. But who could have guessed, that on such a journey they would also discover breathtaking beauty?
Stories of the newly discovered land that lies across the Pacific have all of Spain twitching with excitement. Glory, adventure, gold and riches. These are the dreams that compel young men to explore the uncharted horizons. These are the words that push reason and thoughts of mortality far to the back of the mind.
The boys are now young men experiencing their fourth year at the academy. And they have also heard, and bantered about, the stories of the new land. But once a story has been retold for its one-hundredth time, the difference between the truth, speculation, and exaggeration become blurred.
Join the team of three as they plunge head-strong into the high seas, westward, into what they assume will be fun, wealth, and land for the taking. Woe to the naïve.
Spain has clearly conquered and dominated Mexico. The years are clicking past for Arturo, and he watches the land slowly and continuously transform into something else. But also, the lives of the indigenous don’t go untouched.
The King of Spain has been generous to Arturo, and he has made a good life for himself in Mexico. Will he remember the wisdom that his mother tried to pass on to him from her life experiences concerning a class system? What about the words of his father when Arturo was first shown the family treasure?
In this chapter of Arturo’s life, he will be introduced to a much larger world, beyond materialism, that will truly change his perspective.
Wealth, abundance, and leisure. Poverty, want, and hunger. In the years that Spain has dominated and oppressed Mexico, the separation between the classes has become a festering resentment. Arturo and his family are to soon face both extremes. He has the unique experience of having lived many years, which has allowed him the opportunity to view things from a perspective that others have not seen.
Although Arturo has been able to maintain the secrecy of his condition from everyone else, including his own family, will he have the patience to deal with others that hold onto their mantra that “greed is good”? During his long journey, Arturo has met and received council from many people that he has deemed far wiser than he.
Join Arturo as he heads into possibly the last phase of his enlightenment.
“This novel is superb, dazzling fiction that richly observes and lovingly crafts each character and every scene...This novel reads like a journal, yet gives the reader an inside point of view of the life of a young man, his discoveries, and his adventures...As you read this novel you are transported...A profoundly moving caper through the Spanish empire.”
